If you haven't heard about or watched it by now, Chris Pratt's speech after he won the generation award at MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday night has gone viral. Below are the rules he shared, with 4 reasons why it has been so well received and appreciated.

  • No. 1 – Breathe. If you don’t, you’ll suffocate.
  • No. 2 – You have a soul. Be careful with it
  • No. 3 – Don’t be a turd. If you are strong be a protector, and if your smart be a humble influencer. Strength and intelligence can be weapons and do not wield them against the week. That makes you a bully. Be bigger than that.
  • No. 4 – When giving a dog medicine, put the medicine in a little piece of hamburger, they won’t even know they’re eating medicine.
  • No. 5 – Doesn’t matter what it is, earn it. A good deed, reach out to someone in pain, be of service, it feels good and it’s good for your soul.
  • No. 6 – God is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you. Believe that. I do.
  • No. 7. If you have to poop at a party, but you’re embarrassed because you’re going to stink up the bathroom, do what I do, lock the door. Sit down, get all the pee out first. Then once all the pee is done, poop, flush, boom! You minimize the amount of time that the poop is touching the air. Cause if you poop first, it takes you longer to pee and then you’re peeing on top of it stirring it up, the poop particles create a cloud, it goes out and then everyone at the party will know that you pooped. Just trust me it’s science.
  • No. 8 – Learn to pray. It’s easy and it’s so good for your soul.
  • No. 9 – Nobody is perfect. People are going to tell you, ‘you’re perfect just the way you are.’ You’re not. You are imperfect. You always will be, but there is a powerful force that designed you that way. And if you’re willing to accept that, you will have grace. And grace is a gift. And like the freedom that we enjoy in this country, that grace was paid for by somebody else’s blood. Do not forget it. Don’t take it for granted. God bless you.”

Here's why this speech is one of the few things everyone seems to agree was awesome.

1) He was authentic

Chris is a funny and disarming guy. He wasn't fake or trying to plan out this great speech that would garner him all this attention. He spoke from the heart and was 100% genuine.

2) He was funny

Humor is the best way to tear down any walls people have. We all love to laugh. If all nine of his points were serious his speech would have landed flat. Nine serious points would have felt like he was talking down to us. Instead, he used humor to help keep the situation light and enjoyable. And it kept our attention.

3) He spoke the truth

Pratt said we should pray (not that controversial), that there is a God (somewhat controversial), and that no one is perfect (very controversial). In his words,

Don’t take if for granted. God bless you.

How does someone get praised by everyone when he said something so counter-cultural to what our culture and so many people preach: that everyone is perfect and we don't need to change for anyone?Because deep down, we all know that isn't true. We all know we make mistakes, and we all need grace. When we pretend we are perfect and don't need to apologize for anything, not only do we not apologize for anything, but we leave no room for grace for anyone else or ourselves. Like Jesus said, the truth really will set you free.To know that we are all broken and need forgiveness and that there is forgiveness and grace in Jesus. There is no more powerful, amazing, and wonderful news that there is. When you share that message in a loving and easy to understand way, it's powerful.

4) He admitted his weaknesses

It is said that people admire your strengths, but resonate with your weaknesses. All of us have weaknesses and have made mistakes. When we are honest about those, people can't help but think "I get what that's like!"In his speech, he didn't say you aren't perfect, he said nobody is perfect and that includes him. And if you watch the speech, you can tell he is including himself in that statement. If you want to watch the speech, click here.
