The Best Minute: Patience, naturalism, and getting started
1 IDEA FROM ME
Patience leads to quicker success.
When cooking meat on a skillet, pan, or griddle, you have to let the surface area of the cooking device rise to its appropriate temperature before you put the meat down. If you do not wait long enough for the cooking surface to rise to the appropriate temperature, it will actually take more time overall to complete the cooking process. While you may assume putting the piece of chicken down sooner might actually speed up the cooking process, it makes the cooking surface take much longer to get to and stay at the appropriate cooking temperature.
Often times we give up on things because we are trying too much too soon. Starting small and slow helps us avoid discouragement and a sense of failure. Patience is the key to success. Instead of giving up because you aren’t going to hit your goal, it would be better to double the timeline to hit that goal.
Give yourself time to learn and get in a rhythm. Then you’ll be able to cook.
2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS
I. Kirsten Birkett on naturalism without God means for us:
It is not only humanity that fails to matter if there is nothing more than the natural world. Ironically, the natural world ceases to matter as well. It is just a collection of atoms. Some of us like our collections of atoms in the form of trees and meadows. Others prefer cars and fuel. Who is to say which is better?
There is no value to be attached to the world other than what any individual cares to give it: and no individual matters more than another. It just comes down to who has the power to make their values win.

II. Ramit Sethi on the importance of getting started:
Who wins at the end of the day? The self-satisfied people who heatedly debate some obscure details? Or the people who sidestep the entire debate and get started?
1 INTERESTING FACT
Bananas grow upside down.
Or technically, we peel them upside down. Naturally, they grow outward from their stems, but that means their bottoms actually face the sky. As they get bigger, the fruits turn toward the sun, forming that distinctive curve.
