The Best Minute: On turning enemies into friends, failure, and having fun

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Tim Keller on pride and humility:

“Pride means you are constantly getting into arguments, and it is only a matter of time before you pick a fight with someone who can hurt you. Humble, careful, discreet speech, on the other hand, disarms people and protects you from the great cost of interpersonal strife.

The ultimate example of this is Jesus himself, who, unlike fools who turn friends into enemies, made a career out of making enemies into friends.”

II. Mary Pickford on failure:

“You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call “failure” is not the falling down, but the staying down.

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. If you are wanting to wake up earlier but a struggling to create a routine where you do so consistently, try these three things:

  1. Purchase a smart bulb and schedule it to turn on 10 minutes before your alarm goes off and have it slowly fade to its highest brightness. Then, when your alarm goes off, you’ll be waking up to a bright instead of dark room.

  2. Set a bedtime timer on your phone. When it goes off, get ready for and then go straight to bed.

  3. Include something in your morning routine that you like or look forward to doing. This makes getting out of bed less dreadful.

II. Don’t feel bad about proactively planning and scheduling your life around things you enjoy. For example, I’m a big Duke basketball fan and put all of their games on my schedule so I can watch them.

In a world that often leaves us overwhelmed and tired, find some things that bring you joy and make sure you spend time doing them.

1 INTERESTING FACT

Some of the “First” and “Second” books in the Bible were divided after they were written.

For example, if 1 & 2 Kings were combined, they would be the longest book of the Bible. 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Chronicles also combine for quite lengthy books.

Why did these “books” get split? It was hard to fit the very lengthy works on one scroll—and even if the scroll was big enough for all that content, it would be too heavy to manage. So they broke some of the longer books down into two volumes.
